Q: Is there Onion or Garlic in the pickles?
A: None of our flavours of pickles contain onion or garlic.
Q: Where is Hudli village? How do we get there?
A: Hudli is a village in Belagavi district, in north-west Karnataka. It takes 1 hour by road to reach there from Belagavi town.
There are regular buses to Hudli from Belagavi.
Q: What is a Khadigram? What are its objectives?
A: Khadigrams create and sustain employment for people of the village. Khadigrams were conceptualised by Gandhiji as an
attempt to increase employment opportunities in rural areas by creating cottage industries.
As employment is the prime objective, the cottage industries selected here typically tend to be labour intensive,
and machinery, if any, is sparingly used. They are co-operative non-profit organisations which receive government funding while being setup.
After which, Khadigrams manage their operations from the revenues they generate. The organisations are run and managed by the
residents of the villages they are present in.
Q: What are the products made by the Khadigram?
A: As the name suggests, Khadi and Khadi products are made here, along with products like Pickles, Organic Soaps and Agarbattis.
As part of this initiative, we will expand our offerings into Papads, and Pulp Juice.
Within Khadi products, we sell Kurtas, Shirts, Trousers, Carpets, Blankets, Hankies and so on.
Q: What will ‘The Hudli Project’ do?
A: The immediate goal of The Hudli Project is to create guaranteed employment for at least 100 women
for an entire year (or longer) by creating demand for the pickles made by the Khadigram.
To do so, we plan to reach out to urban areas across India and raise awareness of the Hudli Khadigram,
its objectives, history, products and employees.
Through this campaign, the Khadigram will learn and experiment with storytelling, digital marketing,
brand management and develop the operational muscle required to become a self-reliant organization
which can create and sustain employment in Hudli for the next few years.
Q: Why pickles? There are so many products out there...
A: Valid question. We want to create sustained employment. A campaign which results
in a temporary blip in demand is not desirable.
Khadi products tend to be twice in a year purchases, and this will not create sustainable employment,
unless we find new customers every month. So, as a first step, we chose pickles,
as their frequency of use is monthly or shorter, thus guaranteeing recurring demand.
Q: Are these pickles of good quality? Are they made at home?
How do we know they are safe for consumption?
A: These pickles are amazing. They are made at a factory, where all the employees gather together
to cut, chop, dry, store, spice, test, and pack the products.
Our factory and products have received FSSAI approval – that’s the government’s regulatory and certifying body
for commercial food products. We have been making pickles since the 1970s, and have a loyal consumer base.
Further, the entire village consumes these pickles on a regular basis.
In essence, we also eat what we make. Just like you eating what you cook. This should give you confidence.
Q: Why do you have a subscription model for 12 and 6 months?
Why can’t you just buy one Jar of pickle at a time?
A. The women who we intend to employ are daily wage casual laborers, uncertain about whether they
will have work the next day. By eliminating this uncertainty, we are empowering these women to take control of their lives.
We want to invest the money you give us in making pickles and creating jobs,
and this subscription period allows us to do that by keeping operational and marketing costs low.
Q: I think I might not be able to finish 500g of pickle in 2 months. Seems a bit too much?
A: That’s alright. We have approximated the number of pickles in each 250g bottle – 30 pieces.
That means you’ll have 60 pieces a month. Considering 2 pieces a day for just one person,
a month now seems to be less if you have friends and family to share with you!
Q: But we eat pickles only on occasion.
A: You can always share what remains of the month’s pickles with your friends, classmates, and colleagues.
Though honestly, try our pickles – you will change your mind.
Q: Look, I don’t want the pickles.
I just want you to take the money as it’s a good cause.
A: Thanks!! But the objective is to work for the money – that’s why we are not a charity.
Why don’t you gift these pickles to someone who likes pickles – we could deliver to them instead.
Q: Why does a Village have a website, a Facebook page, a video and other digital content?
A: We realize that to progress with the rest of the nation, we need to embrace change however challenging it may be.
We need to ensure that our families feel secure through regular employment and a stable income.
To this end, we need to tap into the booming e-commerce industry to sell our products.
We need to get a foothold in social media and advertising.
We’re sure that if people know of us and give us a chance, we’d be irresistible!
Of course, we had good people helping us along the way.
Q: Is it just employment and wages that this Project aims to ensure for women?
A: The primary objective is to bring in more people under the employment net – we will not lose sight of that objective.
We will work closely with the Panchayat to improve the quality of life of our employees,
and whenever feasible, provide money for empowerment outside the Khadigram’s ambit.
Q: Will you really be making a difference?
A: We will be making an immediate and considerable impact on 100 people who are currently unemployed or
dependent on daily wage labour. Village economies are closely connected, so an influx of funds will benefit almost everyone.
Further, the presence of these funds will allow us to increase and improve our marketing
and distribution activities – which could fuel more employment.
Q: But it’s just a 100 women. How is such a small number going to make any REAL difference?
A: Good question. The answer is two-fold.
One. If we are successful, the work we did could be used as a template to help other villages become financially independent.
Think of it as the start of a movement where rural ingenuity and urban resourcefulnesscome together to build self-reliant villages.
Two. Women are the pillars which support our society. The stronger the pillars, the stronger the structure above.
An empowered woman takes better care of herself. By extension she takes better care of her children
and is a positive influence on all her relatives and friends.
So while the number of women employed maybe 100, the people positively affected could reach 1000.
1 empowered woman = 1 empowered family
10 empowered women = 1 happy neighbourhood
100 empowered women = A Strong Village
Q: You mentioned the Khadigram is in Karnataka ? Does that mean you deliver only in Karnataka ?
A: We will deliver our pickles to all Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities within India.

Q: When can you expect your subscriptions to be fulfilled?
A: We plan to deliver to all our subscribers during the last week of every month.
Your pickle packages will be delivered within 4-6 weeks from order date.
We are currently in the process of finalizing a delivery partner for our pan India operations.
Q: Are children employed in our factories?
A: No. We think that children should attend school. So, they will not be allowed to work in the factory.
Q: Did Gandhiji really visit the Village?
A: Yes. In 1937. He stayed here for a week. He inaugurated the Khadigram.
It has probably been this village’s most memorable moment till date.
Q: Do people in Hudli speak English? How did you get all this done?
A: No. Kannada is the primary language here. We took the help of three IT professionals from Bangalore who have quit their jobs.
They are still figuring out what to do with their lives, and decided to help us.
These 3 folks are currently responsible for the marketing, website and logistics.
